Chapter Thirteen

Tiago

The bus ride back to the city was torture. Every bump, every tree, every small town we passed made the distance between me and Hem grow larger. If I hadn’t been bummed out when I got in Steve’s car, I definitely was when he dropped me off at the small bus station where I’d last been at five a.m. yesterday. Seeing the place in bright sunlight, I wanted to give it a hug. It was more downcast than I was.

And as for Steve, he took pleasure, I was sure of it, in telling me lurid tales of Hem’s sex life. According to the omega, I was one in a long line of omegas Hem had bedded. None of them meant anything, no matter how much the alpha professed a lifetime of affection.

Steve hinted that his and Hem’s family had agreed when they were born that they should be mated. There was no way to find out if this was true, and there was no point. Hem was the past. The present was bleak, and I had no future.

Arriving in the city in the cold gray dawn, I spent hard-earned cash and got a ride-share home. Based on the messages, I was expected in the office, so I asked the driver to wait while I took a quick shower and raced back to the car, half-dressed. I’d be eating ramen noodles at lunch and dinner for weeks to make up for the expense. And Ted would want every last penny of the money the accountant advanced for the trip. Not that I’d steal any of it, but I’d paid Oscar for a night and a deposit for the rest of the week. Ted would probably wring that money out of me too.

My desk was piled high with files when I walked in, wiping exhaustion from my eyes, and I paused, the little voice in my head telling me, “Turn around and run. Don’t come back.” But there was nowhere to run, and more specifically, no one to run to. If Tiago had met Hem, perhaps we could have had a future. But Theo, who’d existed for one night of passion, had evaporated.

Coffee! I headed to the break room to make my own. The other cubicle workers and I were the only ones who drank the homemade stuff. The managers and division heads turned their noses up at it and had me order in, and once they arrived, there'd be demands for croissants or danish pastries, and yes, coffee.

While my job was demanding and thankless, I normally juggled a million different tasks at once. But today, not even the bitterest of black coffee surging through my veins could wake me up. Considering I’d spent a chunk of yesterday in Steve’s truck and the night on a bus, it wasn’t surprising I had no energy. That was what I told myself as A and J arrived. Was it that late? They usually sauntered in mid-morning.

“You’re back.” Jeff made a face and flapped a hand in front of his face.
